Tick-Tock’ its all in the TTTTT Timing! By Matthew Turnock, PGA Teaching Professional, Mottram Hall
The concept of “timing” in relation to the golf swing is something that is often difficult to communicate to players (especially those new to the game) as it is something you can’t quite put your finger on as to how you’ve just done it.
The only evidence is often the feel of the shot coming sweetly off the clubface and the “zipping” sound the ball makes as it is propelled at speed off into the distance.
“If only I could bottle that one every time” is something I hear a lot.

Getting ‘Under the Ball’ – you’re not supposed to! By Steve Fawcitt, PGA Teaching Professional, Slaley Hall
The inspiration for this article comes from a couple of lessons I have had over the last week where both individuals passed the same comment about their ball striking. Both complained of not being able to get “under the ball” and so they were topping the ball a lot and thinning it or catching the ground before the ball. This is a classic example of a misinterpretation of what you need to do to produce a correct ball strike and is a regular comment from novice golfers and mid-high handicappers.
Shots hit off the ground should have a negative attack angle in order to produce a ball first contact. In other words the club head should be travelling downwards towards the ball and the low point of the swing arc should be after the ball. Golfers who are trying to get “under the ball” will be encouraging a positive angle of attack, the low point of the swing arc will be before the ball and the club head will be travelling upwards at the point of impact.

Warm Layer: a lightweight Insula sweater is ideal, it’s warm, stretchy and breathable.
