Well played Ricky good try - By Mark Barber
So my prediction for the Masters didn’t quite come off, but it was a sterling effort none the less! But why? Well, I backed a guy that isn’t swinging it great at the moment and has only finished under par in tournaments twice this year. Not the greatest run of form. BUT, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; you can’t control the club face if you cant control your mind. They are inextricably linked!
Augusta is not a golf course for the faint-hearted. It’s elevation changes and unforgiving design leave little room for error. Although it was playing a lot easier this year than in previous years, it was still a challenge for anyone teeing the ball up.

Is your day job affecting your golf?
One of the most common physical limitations that I encounter with my clients is poor posture, primarily in the upper thoracic spine. This is evident primarily in their set up and stance to the golf club, but can often also be visible in their natural standing posture.
Good posture is key to efficient movement and reduces the stress that you place on muscles, joints and ligaments which ultimately decreases your risk of injury, pain or discomfort. Relate this to your golf swing and good posture is important for rotation of the body, timing, balance and rhythm.

Does your practice make perfect?
Very often as a golf coach I see players beating balls on the range or performing drills on the green that they feel will help them improve a skill which they struggle with. Quite often this looks like golfers hitting putts from the same position to the same hole or striking 50 drivers in a row to the same target in the belief that it will help them when faced with this situation in their next monthly medal. Although it seems logical that after you’ve missed a 6 footer in the last medal you should stand on the putting green for hours on end holing consecutive 6 footers, unfortunately you may find that it was a waste of time. This article will explain why your practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect and it will give you some ideas as to how to constrain your practice to make it more efficient and easier to transfer into game situations.
Often the downfall of practice or doing drills is that it is based upon an isolated technique such as hitting 100 putts from the same position or 100 balls down the range with the same club and as a result people base their progress upon how many repetitions they achieve without failing (e.g. how many putts holed consecutively from 6 foot).

The myth of the Draw!
On numerous occasions I have watched, read or listened to the ‘textbook’ version of how to play a draw shot around a tree. This often includes instructions to simply align body parts to the right of the tree and then “swing along this line”. Whilst I agree this may encourage a draw shape (right to left curvature), this will certainly not help you curve it around the tree that is positioned in front of you. The main reason for this being that for a real draw shot, the clubface should also be altered in the setup position as well as the body alignment that we are all told to solely concentrate on. Let’s investigate more!
Clubface is king in my eyes and modern day ball flight monitors have helped to dispel myths and confirm that the initial starting direction of the golf ball will be more dependent on the clubface alignment than the club path direction. In more exact science, dependant on the loft of the club, the clubface will have between 75% – 90% influence on the starting direction of the ball. In the picture shown, the blue line shows the direction that the club head is moving (club path) whilst the red line shows where the club head is pointing. The red dotted line shows the starting direction of the golf ball, more towards the face angle that the path direction.
