Hanson makes a great start
Chris Hanson the Huddersfield based PGA Challenge Tour player has made a great start to his 2015 season by finishing 4th in last weeks Challenge de Madrid courtesy of a last round 7 under par 65 to finish on 16 under par for the week. Hanson who has been coached by Academy Director Mark Pearson since 2010 and more latterly this winter worked on physical conditioning with Academy fitness trainer Rachael Tibbs.
Pearson said ‘ Its always good to see players get a nice start particularly when theres been such a lot of hard work through the Winter. The plan was to try and gain Chris around 20 yards in distance if possible through a combination of technique change and physical conditioning. The early signs and statistics would appear to have proved the work a resounding success. Indications around a month ago suggested his clubhead speed was around 3mph faster but maybe more importantly Trackman was showing his angle of attack had changed from around -1 on the way down to around 2 degrees up at impact. All in all gaining him around 15-20 yards.’

Lee qualifies in spectacular fashion!
Last week our new resident PGA Teaching Professional, Lee Morrisroe played in the Titleist/Footjoy PGA Professional Championship qualifier at Fulford Golf Club in York. There were 61 players entered in the qualifier but with only 12 qualifying places available.
Lee got off to a poor start, bogeyed 3 of his first 4 holes and eventually making the turn at 3 over par. He started to find some form on the back 9 when he drove the 328 yard par 4 12th and two putted for an easy birdie. He went on the make some solid pars from 13 through to 17 but he quoted; “I knew 2 over wouldn’t qualify and I was trying everything to get back to level par as I thought that might have a chance but the putts just wouldn’t drop.”

Strategy off the Tee
If you head out to almost any practice range on a nice evening, you are likely to find a range full of golfers hitting ball after ball. Of course, they are all there for the same reason – to improve their game and shoot lower scores. As golfers, we always want to get better, and improving our swings is a great way of doing that. However, improving ones technique is not the only way of improving your scores and often golfers can shoot significantly lower scores just through improving their course management skills. This article will help make smarter decisions off the tee and choose better target lines to help you save shots.
Between two golfers of equal abilities, the player with superior course management skills will almost always prevail. Raymond Floyd once brought up the importance of strategy when he was talking to an amateur after a pro am and said “If I was given your physical game and we had a match, I would beat you 99 times out of 100 because I know how to play the game better than you do.” His quote highlights that often pro’s don’t just hit the ball better than the average amateur, they often think their way around the course better which helps them shoot lower scores.

Rory’s back!
Rory Mcilroy has just been crowned the 2015 WGC winner after a brilliant display at the weekend.
Seeing Rory demolish the field 1 by 1 is not something new to us, he has the ability to systematically tear almost any golf course apart and on his day is almost unstoppable; just like we saw at the Ryder Cup, Rory is still a young man, he’s still susceptible to moments of occasional madness and unthinkable 4-putts. He rides crests of waves and wallows in the depths of lulls but one thing is certain, he’s a formidable athlete capable of achieving great things in this sport.

Could your diet help you score better on those closing holes?
Nutrition and diet are an important part of any sports person or athletes focus when considering performance and ways to optimise it. This also applies to the professional and elite golfers out on tour week in week out. How much emphasis however does the regular amateur golfer place on diet and nutrition, and do we consider what affect the food we consume has on our on-course performance?
The answer is, not nearly enough of us do and whilst we may make it part of our Saturday morning routine of visiting the nets or chipping green prior to our weekly competition round; we don’t consider the best way to fuel our bodies in preparation for our finest round yet! However by planning our meals and fluid consumption prior and during a round of golf, this could be just as effective as any pre-round practice.
