‘The Great Escape’ … learning the art of recovery shots
We’ve all been there, you’ve hooked your tee shot, you have a gap in the trees and the flag is tucked away behind a bunker on the left hand side, do you go for it and hook the ball 15 yards onto the green or do you chip out? This article will help you understand how to take on them sometimes daunting escape shots.
Lets start with skills. I want you to quickly think back to your last round of golf and consider the amount of shots which required you to shape a shot in some form or another to get the ball in an ‘optimal’ position on that hole – I bet you can think of quite a few. I now want you to think about what you practiced on the driving range the last time you was there. Often the answer is getting a more consistent technique. If your technique was the only thing you focused on the last time you practiced you may be focusing too heavily on creating a pretty golf swing and not focusing enough on being able to achieve all the skills required for you to get the ball in the hole in as fewer strokes as possible

Confidence is King
Ever had that little nagging feeling that something about the shot you’re about to play isn’t right? You aren’t alone.
It’s crucial to be confident before during and after the golf swing. Confident in your decision making, confident in your actions, your shot selection, target, aim, yardages, stance, ball position – to name but a few. If even one of those makes that little voice in your head start to nag then maintaining focus and pulling off the shot confidently is less likely to happen.
Each shot has a certain amount of variables such as distance to target, wind speed & direction, ball lie – again to name but a few. Now you need to match up your knowledge of what you’re capable of with the equipment available to hit the required shot. If there is any doubt about either of those two that little voice will rear it’s ugly head and unless you’ve got a process for dealing with them you can kiss a great shot goodbye.
