Junior Golf – rewarding the right things
by Mark Baber, Academy Mind Coach
So it’s Sunday morning. My eldest son is at his football match for the local team and he’s been struggling a little recently. He has however soldiered on through the trough and was optimistically looking to pick up a bit of form; and with it a promotion from defence to his more favoured position of midfield. Last week he had a blinder of a game and for the last 10 minutes of the game was allowed into midfield – he’s pretty solid in defence but does have a habit of fluffing it when trying to be more attacking so it was a big move for him. He’s always been rewarded and praised for effort over outcomes of games so as long as he put 100% in that’s all that mattered. To be fair, he’s no Ronaldo, but he did ok. With his confidence high and a good night’s sleep last night he was raring to go this morning – and boy did he go! He had a blinding first half in defence and then got moved into midfield for the second half. He was like a tasmanian devil up and down the pitch, passing, moving, heading crosses and defending as last man – it was by far his best game I’ve ever seen him play – and I’m not saying that as his dad, believe me; he’s had some shockers too! He played well and was duly rewarded with some 10yr old treats; pop and pizza mainly.

Hitting it Further – The TRUTHS!
by Thomas Devine, PGA Teaching Professional, Oulton Hall.
In the past year there have been multiple campaigns in the golfing press about ‘high launch and low spin’ being the secret to more distance. Forget the low runner down the fairway, 2015 has been all about the high launch. The cynic amongst you may ask, “why has it taken the manufacturers so long to work this out?”
However, on closer inspection they do actually seem to have a point. And furthermore, the beauty of modern day ball flight monitors has allowed us to objectively quantify these statements. Despite this, one thing that does aggravate me is the theory that ‘one size fits all’. This could not be further from the truth – let me explain. The distance a ball travels is dependent on many factors and but specifically I believe that ball speed, launch angle and spin rate are 3 key contributors to distance. Please note that club head speed was not included so it isn’t all about trying to hit it harder to hit it further!

How effective is your pre-round warm-up?
by Rachael Tibbs, Golf Specific Fitness Trainer.
How many of you out there, jump out of your car, throw your golf shoes on whilst sitting in your boot, grab your clubs and head straight to the first tee? You then proceed to spend the next 3 holes warming up and getting your swing into some sort of shape to allow you to play the rest of the round to your handicap?
You are not alone in doing this as the majority of amateur golfers, at all handicap levels, fail to warm-up appropriately before a competitive round of golf. Many of the reasons include insufficient time, worrying what playing partners/others may think, not knowing the correct way to warm-up and ultimately not understanding the effects and therefore importance of a specific pre-round warm-up.
